Who We Are

Everything You Always Wanted To Know About The Northeast District

What is the Northeast District?

The Northeast District is one of eight districts of Women of Reform Judaism. It is composed of 90 affiliate Sisterhoods representing approximately 11,000 women that come from New York and New England in the United States and Ontario and Quebec in Canada.

What is its purpose?

The Northeast District serves as a link or liaison between the many local sisterhoods and WRJ. We are here to encourage understanding and support of the programs, activities, and projects of WRJ and to provide direct services to our district sisterhoods.

How is it organized?

The Executive Committee of the district is made up of a President, First Vice President, Four Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Membership Secretary and Area Directors. The Board of Directors includes the executive committee plus Past Presidents of the District and WRJ Board members residing in the District, committee chairs, members-at-large, and the president of each affiliated Sisterhood in good standing, or her duly appointed representative.

Who is my direct link to the District?

Your direct link to the district is your Area Director. Each sisterhood is assigned an Area Director who calls your Sisterhood President several times a year and checks in with her. The Area Director will report on District or WRJ happenings, but most importantly, she is there to hear what's going on in your sisterhood. If you have a special concern, she can help or guide you to someone who can.

What is our history?

The WRJ Northeast District was formed through a consolidation of District 1 (New England Region) and District 3 (New York, Eastern Canada, and the Virgin Islands) in 2008. Both District 1 and District 3 were strong districts with rich histories. The consolidation of these two districts has formed a new district and we are stronger together.

What is the Biennial Convention?

The Northeast District holds a Biennial Convention and Meeting in the fall of the even numbered years in order to elect officers and board members, approve the district budget, approve resolutions and revise the constitution. At Biennials, delegates have the opportunity to meet other women with similar interests and goals, to receive inspiration and information from District leaders and to hear invited guest speakers. They learn new techniques to develop Sisterhood programs and projects, and to offer suggestions for the betterment of the District and Sisterhoods in general.

District Newsletter

The Northeast District publishes its own newsletter three times a year. It gets mailed to your sisterhood in addition to being emailed to your sisterhood president. The purpose of the newsletter is to inform sisterhoods of what is going on in the district and WRJ as well as a place for sisterhoods to share ideas with each other. If you are not seeing it, please ask your sisterhood president to email it to you.
